GORDONVALE PONY CLUB

AND

EQUESTRIAN CENTRE

(Many thanks to Eric Baker, David Frazer, Sandra Charlton & Louise Cable-Tuck for putting together this history)

We now know that about 50 years ago the Gordonvale kids used to go for rides together along the river banks around Gordonvale. On one occasion they decided to organise a bushman's carnival & it was such a success, the idea of the Gordonvale Pony Club was born.

The club has existed in many guises since 1958 & the first official meeting was held at the Gordonvale CWA. The minutes are dated 26th August 1960. It was at that meeting that the committee decided to adopt a logo of the Pyramid enclosed by a horseshoe bearing the club name.

In the early days, the club rode at Behanna Creek Flats & Aloomba's Rossi Creek. The members finally settled for training days at Alley Park in Gordonvale & there were so many of them that the club held gymkhanas just for themselves. During the next 40 years there were many ups & downs & at one stage the club actually folded & gave all its equipment away.

About 10 years ago the club started up again with a new committee of Bill Bennett, Louise Cable-Tuck & Jan Baverstock. Both Louise & Jan are still our club instructors today. Now that's staying power!

The new site at Vico Street is nestled amongst 44 hectares of tranquility bounded by national parks. The club was incorporated in 1994 & is now affiliated with the Pony Club Association due to the interest of our junior members. The club house has been erected & a fence built along Vico & Hives Streets for the safety of our horses & riders.

We now look forward to the next 50 years & hope that you will come along for the ride.....
